James Harrison Mullins III

Jim Mullins (1945-2025) James Harrison Mullins III, 80, of Huntsville, AL passed away on August 22, 2025. He was born at Fort Rucker, AL on July 28, 1945 to Harry and Ruby Mullins. He lost his parents when he was young and was raised and loved by his Grandfather and Grandmother, James and Della, his Uncle Fred, Aunt Christine and cousin Patty. Jim graduated from Ardmore High School in 1963, followed by his graduation from the U.S. Navy Instructor Training School in 1969. He then obtained Bachelor of Arts Mathematics from the University of Alabama in 1973 and a Bachelor of Science Electrical Engineering from the University of Alabama in 1974. In 1982 he received Masters of Science Engineering from University of Alabama in Huntsville. For over 36 years Jim Mullins led efforts within the U.S. Army to advance radar and missile seeker technology. His efforts and patents proved to be the foundation of all modern air defense and strike missile systems. He was among a select few in the world able to build and design advanced radars. He was both a technical innovator and a leader of people, always placing the needs of others first. He was loved and admired by all who worked with and for him. In addition to his exemplar Army civilian career, Jim served from 1969 to 1975 in the US Navy as a Naval Electronics Instructor rising to the rank of First Class Petty Officer. In 1968 Jim met and married the blond haired, green-eyed beauty that was the love of his life. They were married in Tuscaloosa, AL but then moved to San Diego, CA for his first US Navy assignment. When they returned to Alabama with their baby girls, Jennifer and Jessica, they moved to Huntsville where they have stayed for over 50 years and completed their family by giving Jennifer and Jessica a brother, Kevin. Jim loved his kids and their families immensely. He attended every family event that he could possibly get to. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Harry Mullins and Ruby Mullins, grandparents James Mullins Sr. and Della Mullins, his grandmother Anna Shaw, his Uncle Fred Stevenson and Aunt Christine Stevenson. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Lynette Mullins, his daughter Jennifer Richman (Mike Richman), his daughter Jessica Vaughn (Allen Vaughn), his son Kevin Mullins (Holly Mullins) and his grandchildren Blake Vaughn, Jacob Richman, Evan Vaughn, Luke Richman, James Richman, Loren Mullins, Garrett Mullins, and Colton Mullins, his cousin Patty Baldwin (Curtiss Baldwin) and their daughters Christen Layhew and Courtney Goss.
