Obituary for Oscar Mack Gates

Oscar Mack Gates, 79, of Pine Street, Athens, AL, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at his residence. Funeral Services were held Thursday, May 1, at 11 a.m. at Ardmore Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Bill Worley officiating. Burial was in the Gatlin Cemetery in Ardmore with Ardmore Memorial Funeral Home in charge. Nephews served as pallbearers.Mack was born August 2, 1928 to Hershel and Delia White Gates in Elkmont, AL. He was of the Church of Christ faith. Mack was active in the Athens Senior Center, a member of the Golden Age Band, and a member of the Dulcimer Association. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and then enlisted in the Marines for three more years of service. Mack was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Allen, Gerald, and a sister, Lorene Adams. Survivors include his wife, Betty Gates of Athens, AL; sons, Oscar Mack Gates, Jr. of Decatur, AL, Allen O'Neal Gates of Decatur, AL, Dane T. Gates of Decatur, AL, Shane M. Gates of Elkmont, AL, Jim Massey of Louisville, KY, Tim Massey of Athens, AL, and David Massey of Franklin, TN; daughters, Susan Harpe of Decatur, AL, and Sara Flemming of Valdosta, GA; brothers, Carl Gates of Athens, AL, Howard "Hank" Gates of Ardmore, TN, and Byron Gates of Elkton, TN; sisters, Lucille Hargrove of Elkton, TN, Iris Dean McAnear of Decatur, AL; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
