Obituary for Karl Hamm

Karl Hamm, 88, of Wooley Springs Rd, passed away at his daughter's home surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his brother Gunther, wife and mother of his children, Hannelore, son Jurgen, second wife: Friedl, and son-in-law: Wade Harris. Born in Auerbach, Germany, he lost his mother at a young age, was drafted into the Army while still in his teens, sent to the Russian Front, lingering as a POW for four years, barely surviving. Not wanting to have to shoot at people, his marksmanship was such that he had his instructors hiding in fox holes. His assignment as a result was taking care of the horses. In 2008, at the age of 84, he immigrated to the US, to be cared for by his daughter and enjoy the family get-togethers of his only grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a loving gentle soul who enjoyed the outdoors, dancing, playing the accordian, and gardening. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. Survivors are his daughter, Margitta Harris of Toney, AL, grandson: Gary (Faith) Harris of Harvest, AL; granddaughter: Meike (Lance) Fisk of Athens, AL; great-grandsons: Caleb and Noah Fisk, and Timothy Harris. Survivors in Germany include a son: Rudiger Hamm and brothers: Bruno (Zilla) Hamm and Friedbert (Heidi) Hamm and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, January 7, 2013, at Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home at 11:00 A.M. with Bro. Mike Jerome officiating. Burial will follow at Hatchett Cemetery.
