Helen White Canfield October 14, 1932 – July 6, 2026 Some lives are measured by accomplishments. Others are measured by the roots they leave behind. Helen White Canfield, 93, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026. She spent her life putting down roots in the Alabama soil she loved, in the family she devoted herself to, in the flowers she lovingly tended, and in the quiet faith that guided every step of her journey. Her legacy lives on in the generations of family she cherished and the countless lives she touched. Helen was born on October 14, 1932, in Madison County, Alabama, to John M. and Nina Anderson White. She was one of 10 children (the oldest daughter), growing up in a large family where hard work, perseverance, and caring for one another were simply part of everyday life. Those early years shaped the woman she would become—a woman of quiet strength, steadfast faith, and unwavering devotion to the people she loved. As a young woman, Helen began her career at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville before marrying Carl A. Canfield on December 19, 1953. Together they began building a life that took them to Grand Island, New York, where their two oldest children, Mike and Karen, were born. Before long, however, home called them back to Huntsville, where Jeff and Laura were born. Helen swore an oath that once she returned to Alabama, she would never leave Alabama again. She never did. Helen devoted herself to raising her family. She created a faith-focused home where love was freely given, and family always came first. Helen’s career journey included 25 years serving the public as an associate with Burger King prior to retirement. Retirement became one of the sweetest chapters of Helen’s life. She spent countless hours alongside several of her sisters volunteering at the family’s greenhouse. She believed there was something special about feeling the earth between her fingers, and nothing brought her more peace than watching something she had nurtured come into bloom. Helen’s faith was the steady foundation beneath every season of her life. Whether sitting in her church pew or faithfully watching services from home each Sunday morning, worship was never absent from her life. She loved the old hymns and could often be heard quietly singing or humming their familiar melodies throughout the day. Helen is survived by her son, Mike Canfield (Ginger) of Madison; her daughter, Laura Russell (David) of Des Moines, IA; and a wealth of grandchildren: Travis Canfield (Laurie), Gabe Canfield, and Ashlen Ehart (Nathan); Natalie Ludwig (Todd) and their children, Alec and Ben; Adam Packard and his daughter Madison; Lisa Hernandez (Eddie) and their children Tyler, Emily (and great-great grandson, Laz), and Kaleigh; Stephanie Packard and her daughter, Olivia; Jordan Bottom (HuanHuan); Amanda Gray (Andrew); Caleb Russell, and Joshua Russell. Helen is also survived by her sisters, Nel McDonald (Florida) and Martha Corey (Tennessee), along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carl A. Canfield; her daughter, Karen Packard; her son, Jeff Canfield; her granddaughter, Jackie Bottom; her parents, John and Nina White; and her siblings Billy Joe White, Charles White (Dorothy) Johnny White (Linda), David White (Chong), Jackie White, Ruthy (Don) Wilson, and Margie White Watson. Her quiet strength and sense of purpose shall be forever remembered, her memory cherished always. In accordance with a lifelong promise shared by Helen and her granddaughter Jackie, Jackie’s ashes will be laid to rest with Helen during the service. It is a final expression of the love that bound them together and a promise being faithfully kept. Visitation will be held at Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home located in Ardmore, Alabama on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 11:00AM until 1:00 PM with a chapel service scheduled immediately after visitation with service time beginning at 1:00 PM. David C. Russell will officiate the service. Burial will follow at Gatlin Cemetery in Ardmore, Alabama.
