Alfred "Al" Crutcher Martin

Alfred “Al” Crutcher Martin died Sunday, August 9, 2020, at his home in Ardmore, Alabama. He was born December 16, 1937 in Athens, Alabama and was the son of William David Martin and Etha Mae Lee Martin. Al, or Papa as he was known to so many, served in the Army for over 20 years. After retiring from the military, he worked over 20 years as an employee of Alabama Concrete. Al was a long time resident of Ardmore, where he was seen many nights either playing softball on the local team or cheering on his kids, grand kids, and great grandkids at school sporting events. Al was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Bobby Martin and Billy Martin, and sister Glenda (Sally) Campbell. He is survived by his wife Linda Faye Clinard Martin; daughters Cynthia (Cindy) Turner, Linda (Lindy) Helton (Mike), and Beth Frederick (Johnny); son Dave Martin (Allison); sisters Ann Sledge (David) and Brenda Brown (Wesley); brothers Glen Martin (Marilyn), Ike Martin (Sybil), and Lonnie Martin (Carol). 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Al spent the first 20 years of his adult life serving his country in the United States Army. He rose to the rank of Sargent First Class E-7. He, his wife, and children spent many years in Germany. Al also served two tours in Vietnam during the war. After retiring, he continued to faithfully support those who served or were serving our country. He was a supporter and frequent visitor of the Alabama Veterans Museum in Athens, Alabama and was a recipient of a Quilt of Valor presented to him in January of this year. He rode many years with the Patriot Guard Riders and was always grateful to be able to show honor to those who had also served our country. He was a faithful member of Piney Grove Baptist Church. He also served many years in the Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Relief organization. Whether using a chainsaw to cut up trees or hauling a shower unit all over the southeast, he spent many days and nights providing help to those that had suffered great lost through natural disasters. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at Ardmore Chapel Funeral Home, Ardmore, Alabama from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM. A grave side service will be held at 6:00 PM at Gatlin Cemetery, Ardmore, Alabama with Brother Lynn Marshall officiating. Pallbearers will be provided by the VFW. Due to Covid-19 and the Statewide mandate, Mask will be required and must be worn at all times when entering the building and while in our facility. Also must practice 6 feet social distancing and washing hands.
